The latest figures highlight Saudi Arabia as the fastest-growing G20 country in terms of tourism, with international arrivals reaching around 30 million in 2024. This record-breaking growth reflects a significant leap from the 17.5 million visitors in 2019, showcasing the Kingdom’s enhanced appeal as a global tourism destination. However, to achieve its ambitious target of 70 million international visitors by 2030, Saudi Arabia will need to sustain an average annual increase of approximately 6.6 million visitors, translating to a 14.69% growth rate per year.

Key Drivers of Growth

Key to this impressive growth trajectory is Saudi Arabia’s robust visa facilitation program, including the expansion of its e-visa scheme, which has attracted millions of international tourists. The Kingdom’s focus on building transformative projects such as the Red Sea Project, NEOM, and Diriyah has been instrumental in propelling its tourism sector forward. These projects are reshaping the global tourism landscape by offering world-class experiences and enhancing Saudi Arabia’s connectivity with the world.

Adapting to Challenges

Despite the challenges, Saudi Arabia has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability in its tourism strategy. Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al Khateeb acknowledged the need for constant improvement and expressed optimism about the Kingdom’s progress. As part of this adaptive approach, Saudi Arabia launched several campaigns in 2024 targeting international markets like the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, the United States, India, and China. These campaigns have successfully drawn international tourists, contributing to the record 30 million arrivals in 2024.

Balancing Luxury and Affordability

A key aspect of Saudi tourism growth is the balance between high-end, luxury-focused developments and the need for affordability and accessibility. With new low-cost carriers and diverse accommodation options, travel to and within Saudi Arabia has become more convenient and affordable. This balance ensures that the Kingdom remains an attractive destination for a wide range of visitors, from luxury travelers to budget-conscious tourists.

Diversifying Tourism Offerings

Religious tourism continues to be a significant driver of visitor numbers, with Makkah and Madinah attracting millions of pilgrims annually. However, the Kingdom is also focusing on diversifying its tourism offerings to include leisure, cultural, and adventure tourism. This diversification is evident in the various large-scale developments and initiatives aimed at providing unique and enriching experiences for all types of travelers.

Sustainable Tourism and Economic Diversification

Saudi Arabia’s commitment to sustainable tourism and economic diversification aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Kingdom’s efforts to promote responsible development, preserve its natural and cultural heritage, and collaborate with international organizations highlight its leadership in the global tourism sector.

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia’s tourism growth is set to continue its upward trajectory as the Kingdom leverages its strategic investments, innovative policies, and visionary planning to attract millions of tourists. With a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and global collaboration, Saudi Arabia is poised to achieve its long-term goal of becoming one of the top seven most visited countries by 2030.
